Football Betting Guide
|
| The following is designed to serve as a guide
to the variety of bets available across the majority of bookmaker
sites. Most bet types are usually self explanatory, although
may not appear straight forward to a novice punter, so are outlined
below. Most of these bet types are available on all Premier
League games, some are an exception and are only offered on
televised matches. |
| |
| Some basic terms explained: |
| Single |
| A bet on the outcome of one event regardless
of the type of bet. |
| Accumulator |
| Several bets on the outcome of several different
events, regardless of the type of bet, where the winning return plus
stake of the first event is carried forward as the stake for the next
event and so on. Winnings are only paid if all bets on events in the
accumulator are successful. A double
is defined as two bets, a treble
three bets and a yankee is four
bets. |
| |
| Bet types covered by most bookmakers on individual
matches: |
| Match Odds |
| Predict the result of a match i.e. home win,
away win or draw. Odds offered on all outcomes. |
| Correct Score |
| Predict the score of a match. Odds offered
on all outcomes and will be much better than the match odds due to
the more precise nature of the bet. |
| First Goalscorer |
| Predict the scorer of the first goal. Odds
offered on all players. |
| Last Goalscorer |
| Predict the scorer of the last goal. Odds
offered on all players. |
| To Score Anytime |
| Predict the scorer of any goal. Odds offered
on all players and will be less than the first and last goalscorers
due to the less precise nature of the bet. |
| Next Goal |
| Predict the team to score the next goal. Odds
offered on both teams and no goal. |
| First Goal |
| Predict the time of the first goal. The match
is broken down into nine 10 minute slots and odds are offered on each
of these. |
| Total Goals |
| Predict the total number of goals to be scored
during the game. Different bookmakers allow different bets for this
type. Some offer odds based on the number of goals falling within
a range such as 0-1, 2-3, over 4 etc. Others offer odds based on the
number of goals exceeding a number i.e. 1 or more, 2 or more, 3 or
more etc. The odds will increase as the threshold you pick does but
opting for a lower goal threshold increases your chances of making
profit. |
| Over / Under 2.5 Goals |
| Predict the total number of goals to be scored
during the game. Odds are offered on only two options of 2 goals or
less, or 3 goals or more. |
| Half Time |
| Predict the result at half time i.e. home
win, away win or a draw. Odds offered on all outcomes. |
| Half Time / Full Time |
| Predict the result at half time and full time
i.e. in effect a double of a half time bet and a match odds bet. Odds
offered on all outcomes and will be better than either of the single
bets due to the double nature of the bet. |
| |
| Additional bet types covered by some bookmakers
on televised matches: |
| Corners Odds |
| Predict the number of corners awarded in a
game. Odds are usually offered on three options with the number of
corners varying e.g. 9 and under, 10 to 12, 13 and over. |
| Corners Index |
| Predict the number of corners awarded in a
game. This is a range bet where an expected number of corners is offered
by the bookmaker and you have the option of buying or selling corners
at a unit price depending on whether you think more or less corners
will be awarded. If you correctly predict which way the number of
corners falls you win the unit price for either each additional corner
or each corner not awarded. |
| Bookings Odds |
| Predict the number of bookings in a game.
Cards are given a points value e.g. 2 points for a yellow and 5 for
a red. Odds are usually offered on three options with the number of
points varying e.g. 5 and under, 6 to 8, 9 and over. |
| Bookings Index |
| Predict the number of bookings in a game.
Cards are given a points value e.g. 10 for a yellow and 25 for a red.
This is a range bet where an expected number of points is offered
by the bookmaker and you have the option of buying or selling points
at a unit price depending on whether you think more or less points
will go into the referee's book. If you correctly predict which way
the number of points falls you win the unit price for either each
additional point or each fewer point. The unit can vary from 1 point
to a number of points depending on the values assigned to each card. |
| Asian Handicap |
| This type of bet is popular in Asia, hence
it's name. With this type of bet you effectively give a team a head
start and the draw is eliminated as it is deemed void. The handicap
applies to a team and represents a number of goals. Whoever wins with
the handicap applied, wins the game. e.g. you back a team with a handicap
of 0; if they win you win, they draw your stake is returned or they
lose and you lose. If you back a team with a handicap of -1; they
win by 2 or more goals you win, they win by 1 goal it's effectively
a draw and your stake is returned, or they draw and you lose. If you
back a team with a handicap of -0.5; they win you win otherwise you
lose. The handicap can also be a combination of handicaps e.g. -0.5
& -1; if they win by 2 goals both parts of the bet win, they win
by 1 goal only half the bet wins and the other half is void, or they
draw and both parts of the bet lose. |

United or Chelsea. Odds offered on all teams except the expected
top three. |
